After spending a very brief amount of time on the Play Store last week, today Google’s very own Contacts and Phone apps for Nexus (and Google Play edition) devices are finally making their return to Google Play. Coinciding with the release of Android 6.0.1 factory images just this morning, perhaps Google simply posted the pair of apps prematurely when they went live last Wednesday. The world may never know.
Again, the reason Google posts core apps like these on the Google Store is so that they can be updated independently of a full firmware system update — now they’re always be up to date and can add new features whenever they like. If you don’t have a Nexus, Android One, or Google Play edition device, you can still sideload the apps on a Marshmallow+ device, but only Contacts appears to be functional.
