HTC-One-A9 (5)

HTC One M10 (Perfume) could feature the same great camera hardware as Nexus 6P, but with one big improvement…

Smartphone manufacturers have been putting a big focus on camera quality these days and we couldn’t be happier. It’s always been Android’s Achilles’s heel — shoddy photo quality — and after years of watching Android devices take a back seat to the iPhone’s shooting capabilities, last year a new crop of Android devices finally took down Apple’s latest and greatest. That is, with the exception of the HTC One M9.

Year after year we’ve watched as HTC dropped the ball with their smartphone cameras and even though the HTC One A9 showed that the company could, in fact, produce decent output, it still left us worried about what they’d do for this year’s HTC One M10. For a flagship device, “good” just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Chiming in with new details surrounding the M10’s camera is LlabTooFeR‏. A reliable source of leaks and information on upcoming HTC devices, he says the HTC M10 could be outfitted with the same Sony IMX377 camera sensor that’s found in the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P but with one key difference: HTC’s camera will have optical image stabilization (OIS).

If you’ve ever seen any of the photos taken with either of the new Nexuses (especially with HDR+ turned on), you’d know that’s something to get excited about. As for the front facing camera, we could be looking at Samsung s5k4e6 5MP “UltraPixel.” Remember, the IMX377 features larger 1.55micron pixels for better low light shooting, which fits right in with HTC’s “UltraPixel” branding.

But even with all this alleged hardware, image quality relies a lot on a smartphone’s software. This is traditionally the area where HTC fumbles things, so it will be interesting to see if their new flagship’s camera performance can finally, after all these years, deliver. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.
