We don’t get to talk about tablets very often these days. The surge of Android tablets has died down dramatically in recent years, but Apple is still pumping out iPads every chance they get. Today they announced a new 9.7-inch model of the iPad Pro. The 9.7-inch display is much closer to a traditional tablet than the ridiculous 12.9-inch display on the original iPad Pro. We’ve compared it with the best Android tablets in the same display size range.
Display
There are quite a few good Android tablets in the 9-inch range. One of the newest Android tablets is actually slightly bigger than the new iPad Pro. The Pixel C comes with a 10.2-inch display, just slightly larger than the 9.7-incher. The Nexus 9 is a little smaller at 8.9-inches, and the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 is, you guessed it, exactly 9.7 inches.
Resolution is where things get more interesting. The Pixel C has the highest resolution of the bunch with 2560×1800. The Nexus 9 and Galaxy Tab S2 both have the same 1536×2048 resolution as the new iPad Pro. The Pixel C display looks amazing, as you might expect, but there’s nothing wrong with the other two displays. 2048×1536 is a reasonable resolution for a 9-10-inch display.
Processor
These four tablets have very different processors. The iPad Pro, of course, has Apple’s A9X chip. The Pixel C and Nexus 9 have NVIDIA-made processors, and Samsung’s tablet has the Exynos 5. This is an area where Apple devices usually lag behind, but the iPad Pro line is called “Pro” because of the PC-like performance. All four of these devices will be powerful enough for your needs.
Miscellaneous
Everything else that we know right now is pretty evenly matched. The iPad Pro has the most RAM, the Nexus 9 probably has the biggest battery (though we don’t know the iPad Pro’s yet), the Tab S2 has the most megapixels (if you’re going to be “that guy” taking photos with a tablet), and the iPad Pro comes with the most storage.
All in all, these are four really great tablets. It depends on what you want in a device. If you’re a die-hard Android users, obviously the iPad Pro isn’t an option. But if you like your Mac and wish it had a touchscreen, the iPad Pro might be worth a shot. Which tablet do you think is the best?
