Here are some sample photos (and video) we took using the Huawei P9’s dual camera

The Huawei P9 was announced early this morning and by now, you’ve no doubt heard plenty of the phone’s biggest standout feature: a dual-camera system. We know what you’re thinking, we’ve already seen this on the HTC One M8 and needless to say, it didn’t help photo quality much. But this time around, Huawei is doing something different.

Instead of using only a single camera sensor to capture an image like on most devices (on the One M8, that second camera was only used for “depth sensing” to help with faster auto-focus), Huawei is using 2 separate cameras — one that photographs color images, while the other captures more detailed monochrome (black and white) photos — combining both into a single output. In theory, this should provide for more rich and detailed images, without having to rely on bigger sensors or awkward camera humps on the back of the phone.

So, that’s how it should work, at least according to Huawei. How it performs in real world tests are another matter entirely. We already showed you a handful of (edited) photos Huawei provided earlier today, but now we have a few we’ve taken ourselves. It’s not much, just a mere sample meant to give you a quick taste of what the Huawei P9 is capable of. For a more detailed look, you’ll just have to wait for our review.
