With over 2 billion apps available for download via Google’s Play Store it’s always interesting to see just how many apps are downloaded in a set period of time. A recent report from Sensor Tower states that there were 11.1 billion downloads in Q1 of 2016.
The 11.1 billion apps downloaded is an increase of 6.7% when compared to the first quarter of 2015. According to the report, the top three apps were social media applications, all of which are owned by Facebook — WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Facebook.
Here’s what topped the Google Play Store by US downloads in Q1 of 2016:
One game that surprisingly made the top 20 in iOS and Google Play worldwide downloads was Clash Royale. This is surprising due to the fact that the game was launched less than a month before the end of Q1, but finished at the number 9 spot in the overall rankings. Supercell, the folks behind Clash Royale and Clash of Clans, are on quite a roll with just these two games.
As for the rest of the Quarterly Report by Sensor Tower for Q1, the Google Play Games category was five times larger than the Tools category, with a difference of over 400% in terms of downloads. This huge gap is even more impressive when you consider that the games category only grew by less than 1%. The category to see the largest jump was Photography, which grew by 20% compared to Q1 of 2015.
By no means are these official numbers by Google, but if it’s accurate this report just goes to show how large the Google Play Store is, and how much it is growing year by year.
