Samsung nearly doubled the smartphone shipments of Apple in Q1 2016

Samsung has a nice accolade to throw under their belt. TrendForce’s quarterly smartphone shipments report shows the company shipped 27.80% of the 292 million smartphones that went around the globe in Q1 2016.

Looking a bit lower on the list reveals they were able to nearly double the shipments of the next closest competitor. That competitor was none other than Apple, who dialed in a respectable 14.40%. Compared to the previous quarter — where Samsung only led Apple by 1.20% — that’s a huge improvement.

The data might not be too surprising. This was the period Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, after all, and with the company said to have achieved a record number of initial shipments they were bound to create a good bit of distance between their Cupertino rivals. For Apple, it wasn’t until the very last day of the quarter that they launched the iPhone SE (and we imagine the demand for that wasn’t nearly as high as their usual flagship launches).

Beyond those 2 juggernauts, Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo showed that China is becoming stronger than ever with market share of 9.30%, 5.80% and 5.50%, respectively, though Huawei’s performance was a slight decline from the 9.50% they posted last quarter.
