Back in February, Sony officially killed off the Xperia Z lineup of devices, with the last release being the Sony Xperia Z5. Now, it seems that Sony is continuing its spring cleaning, and axing the Xperia C and M series of devices, leaving just the Xperia X lineup.
Presentation slides have surfaced that show some of Sony’s intents for its game plan with mobile devices moving forward, with the primary focus being the newly released Xperia X lineup. The slides detail the three “chapters” that Sony has taken in the world of mobile devices since its change of focus in 2010:
- Chapter 1: 2010-2012 – Open OS for web communication
- Chapter 2: 2013-2015 – Best of Sony: Camera & AV entertainment
- Chapter 3: 2016-2018 – Xperia for new communication “X”
Sony has already announced or released devices for each market of smartphones. The Sony Xperia XA fits into the low-range market, the Sony Xperia X is targeted the mid-range, and the Sony Xperia X Performance is cruising with the flagships.
It will be interesting to see what other plans Sony has up its sleeves for the future, as the third chapter also mentions the Internet of Things (IoT) and the cloud. We can’t say for certain what Sony’s plans for the future are, but we’re sure they’re gearing up for some type of announcement that’ll tell it all.
