Motorola fans have not been happy with Lenovo since the acquisition in 2014. Android updates have been slower than usual, 20% of the workforce was laid off, 3 Chicago offices were closed, and earlier this year we heard that the Motorola brand could eventually be phased out completely. If a recent cryptic tweet from @evleaks is any indication, the Moto brand could be gone sooner than we thought.
The tweet reads “Goodbye, Moto X. Details tomorrow.” There’s not a lot of information to go on, but the rumors from earlier this year lead us to believe this has to do with a branding change. The report from January of this year claimed that Motorola would live on as “Moto by Lenovo.” The name would be reserved for high-end devices and headed up by Rick Osterloh. But as we know, Osterloh recently took a job at Google.
For whatever reason, it seems Lenovo wants to change things up at Motorola. There’s a very real chance that the Motorola Moto X 2016 will not be called the “Moto X.” Would that be a bad thing? It’s hard to know if the “Moto X” brand had any significant recognition. Hopefully, the new name doesn’t suck. What are your thoughts on the situation?
