Google Home, the answer to Amazon’s Echo, to be debuted at Google I/O 2016
According to a new report from The New York Times, Google has named its competitor to Amazon’s Echo platform, dubbing it ‘Google Home’. The release of an Amazon Echo competitor at Google I/O was already rumored, but an official name was never mentioned.
The previous name running around the rumor mill was that this new platform was code-named “Chirp” and is another step in the direction of full home automation. There are of course many questions surrounding this upcoming device or platform, many of which could be answered at the Google I/O 2016 keynote and related sessions thereafter.
In addition to Google coming up with a name for the platform, the report also states that Google Home would not hit the public market until the fall. This would give developers more than ample time to weed out the bugs, get some new features created before launch, and align the launch with the always lucrative holiday shopping season.
The biggest question about Google Home is whether Google can turn this into more than just a device with always-listening voice search. We’ll wait to see what is announced at Google I/O and be sure to keep an eye out here at Phandroid.
