Hangouts for Android and iOS get the same version number in latest update, but not the same features
Why, hello there, version 10 of Hangouts for Android. Nice to see you! What do you have for us today? Oh, wait, you have a twin? His name is Hangouts for iOS? It just jumped to version 10, too? How fantastic, you two must share and do everything together!
Except they don’t. You see, Google recently updated Hangouts for both iOS and Android to version 10. You would think this would bring about the feature parity we’ve been crying for all this time.
But no. This version 10 of Hangouts for Android still doesn’t have everything that the iOS counterpart does, with the main lacking point still being the ability to send video messages. We do get a new feature in this update, though. It’s Direct Share (the ability to share stuff from other apps directly to specific Hangouts conversations), and as much as we want to applaud the Hangouts team for finally delivering it, it’s pretty sad that they’re only now implementing this after Marshmallow (the version of Android which introduced the feature) has been out for so long.
We’re not sure what’s going on over in their offices, but this is getting a bit ridiculous. Perhaps we should just wait for Allo and Duo and start saying our goodbyes to Hangouts, because it sure seems like Google doesn’t have a care in this world for it at this point.
