Samsung Pay has finally reached Europe. The mobile payments service has launched in Spain, to be specific, and joins the US, China and South Korea as the only markets which currently support it.
Those with the Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 edge, S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+ will be able to use it. The Note 5 is notably missing, but that’s because Samsung infamously declined to launch the Galaxy Note 5 in Europe.
Anyway, Samsung Pay is currently available for CaixaBank and imaginBank, with Abanca and Banco Sabadell being added sometime soon. For retail stores, Samsung has Cepsa, Cervecería La Sureña, Domino’s Pizza, El Corte Inglés, Fridays, Ginos, Grupo DIA, MediaMarkt, Mercadona, Phone House, Repsol, Rodilla, Saba, Starbucks, The Good Burger, The Wok, VIPS, VIPSmart, 100 Montaditos on board, with more coming over time.
It’s worth noting that Samsung didn’t mention the ability to use MST to use Samsung Pay with any standard card reader. We’re not sure if this is a limitation of the technology in Spain, but Samsung specifically mentioned contactless NFC-based terminals as those which Samsung Pay supports in the region. Keep that in mind before you go into a store with an ancient cash register expecting your phone to work like a credit card.
