When Project Fi first debuted, it offered an interesting prospect for those looking for the best possible coverage from their wireless service: multiple networks instead of just one. They started out operating on both T-Mobile and Sprint towers, with specially designed Nexus smartphones changing between the two to deliver the best combination of network speed and coverage.
Today, the MVNO is adding a 3rd network to the mix — US Cellular — and with a combination of all 3, is promising that most customers will be connected to blazing fast 4G LTE 95% of the time. Here’s how Google Fi works as posted on the official Android blog:
“By analyzing speeds from each network, Project Fi is able to predict the fastest network at your location — down to the city block — and automatically connect you. We’re constantly adapting to consider how factors like new cell towers and newly-available radio frequencies are impacting real-world speeds.”
So there you have it. If you tried Project Fi previously and weren’t happy with your coverage, the addition of US Cellular might help change that.
