Does anyone remember that $4 smartphone that was making its ways around the internet a few months back? The one that used a $60 smartphone with some white-out over the markings of the actual manufacturer to give an impression of a better phone. The Freedom 251 from Ringing Bells was the name of that device, and it sold 200,000 units in India.
Now it seems that the Freedom 251 is ready for prime-time as Ringing Bells has acquired or manufactured all the units needed to fulfill its first shipment. The $4 smartphone will be making its way to the hands of those who pre-ordered it in India starting on June 30th.
Freedom 251 Specs:
- 4″ WVGA IPS Display (480 x 800)
- 1.3GHz Quad Core Processor
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB Storage with microSD card slot
- 3.2MP rear-camera
- 0.3MP front-camera
- 1450mAh Battery
- Android 5.1 Lollipop
It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that you can’t sell a $4 smartphone in large quantities and be able to sustain that business model before simply running out of resources or manpower. Due to this reasoning, the company has partnered with other software companies for licensing purposes, but they had also reached out to the government to continue making the Freedom 251 available.
