In Google’s attempt to inject Chrome OS with more Android, they’re getting ready to add some supporting cast features. New commits to the code for Chrome OS are showing signs of support for fingerprint sensors.
Fingerprint sensors on laptops are nothing new, but Google and the various other companies making Chromebooks have yet to use them, likely due to lack of need as it’s a web-based OS. But with Android apps now implementing support for fingerprint sensors thanks to native support that started with Android 6.0 Marshmallow (and with Chrome now being able to run those apps) it’s becoming a growing need.
Unfortunately, a code commit for a hardware element is not much use without the hardware element, so we’ll begin waiting for news on the first device (another Chromebook Pixel, anyone?) to have one.
