Most owners of the Galaxy Note 7 have received their replacement Galaxy Note 7’s but there may be another issue on Samsung’s hands. A passenger on a Southwest Airlines flight from Louisville to Baltimore experience their Galaxy Note 7 smoking and catching fire after the device was powered down before the flight took off.
The passengers and flight crew were evacuated and the flight was canceled after the device “burned through the carpet and scorched the subfloor of the plane.” The passenger also stated that the Note 7 was at about 80% charged when he turned it off and put it in his pocket and that’s when he started to notice that the device had started smoking.

The device in question was supposedly one of the replace Galaxy Note 7’s which was confirmed after the passenger sent images of the new box that includes the “black square symbol” to differentiate from defective devices. The passenger has claimed that he replaced his old device with a new one at a local AT&T store on September 21st after hearing the reports of the global recall.
The Verge has made contact with Samsung for an official statement but had not yet received a response at the time of this writing. Luckily, no one was injured and Southwest Airlines has rescheduled flights for everyone involved.
UPDATE: Samsung has issued the following response:
“Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note7. We are working with the authorities and Southwest now to recover the device and confirm the cause. Once we have examined the device we will have more information to share.”
