Google has made it clear that the Pixel and Pixel XL have an IP53 dust and water resistance rating. This means that the phones shouldn’t be damaged by “water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from vertical.” Since some YouTubers these days make a living by seeing how much abuse smartphones can handle, it was inevitable that someone would drop the Pixel into a bowl of water to test its water resistance.
The video above shows the Pixel working normally after being submerged in a bowl of water for 30 minutes. While the Pixel may have an IP53 rating, it’s clear that the phone has a good chance of surviving if you accidentally spill a drink on it or drop it into the toilet for a few seconds. Keep in mind that the video is not a lab test and was conducted on only one Pixel. Just because this specific device was not damaged when submerged into a bowl of water, that does not mean every device will survive under the same conditions.
To be safe, we recommend keeping your Pixel dry at all times.
