Samsung’s semiconductors and displays are found in some of the best flagship smartphones in the industry and if this new report is to be believed, Samsung could be seeking to joing the fingerprint chip market. That market is currently cornered by Synaptics, who furnishes most of the fingerprint chips you’ll find in smartphones and laptops today.
According to a new report from South Korea, Samsung’s LSI division is believed to be developing a new fingerprint sensor chip since last year. The report says the chip is in the final stages of development and Samsung will be able to commercialize them starting next year. Industry watchers believe Samsung intends to use them in its own low and mid-range smartphones and eventually its premium flagship smartphones before Samsung begins selling to other smartphone manufacturers.
Samsung already supplies display panels, processors, RAM, storage, and more so the addition of a fingerprint sensor to the list makes a lot of sense for the company.
