Last week, Google announced an all new version of Android Auto would be released to the masses. The indications were that you would no longer need a compatible head unit in your car, instead, you would be able to use Android Auto with nothing more than your smartphone.
It was unknown when Google was planning to release the new version of Android Auto, but it seems today is that day. The company has started sending out emails to everyone who signed up to be notified when the update would be released.
This update allows anyone with an Android phone (running 5.0 or later) to use a driver friendly interface to access the key stuff you need on the road ― directions, music, communications ― without the distraction of things that aren’t essential while driving.
Now that the app is available for download, we were able to take a quick look at what is being offered, and are pretty impressed so far. Being able to access Maps, your music app of choice, and the Phone conveniently is awesome and promises to help keep your eyes where they belong while driving.
What’s even better is that there is a new collection of apps within the Play Store that allows you to view and download different apps. These apps are already updated with Android Auto support and include:
WHAT’S NEW
- Android Auto now works with any car! Use it directly on your phone screen
- Android Auto on your phone screen can start automatically when connecting to your car’s Bluetooth
- Even more compatible apps: http://g.co/androidauto
- Send a customized reply message with a single tap
- Scroll through song lists more easily with the new letter jump feature
Google claims the new Android Auto app is available for download in more than 30 countries. However, if you don’t see it right away, don’t worry as it’s probably going to be a staged rollout. Hit the link below to download Android Auto, give it a test drive, and let us know what you think.
