Could this be our first look at the Axon 8?

ZTE has been in the headlines this week due to a series of new leaks surrounding the Nubia Z17, but it seems that the company is working on another new device. An unknown handset passed through TENAA, China’s version of the FCC, and retains many of the same design details as the ZTE Axon 7 which blew folks away in 2016.

According to the listing, the model number for this unknown device is “A2018” which suggests it could be the successor to the Axon 7 which has a model number of “A2017”. The overall design seems to be essentially the same, which would be a questionable move for an all-new flagship.

This has led some to speculate that this device is a modified version of the Axon 7s which was recently unveiled. The reason for speculation of the A2018 being a modified version is due to the battery size which comes in at 3,320mAh versus the 3,400mAh battery found in the Axon 7s.

The TENAA results also reveal that the device measures in at 151.7 x 75 x 7.7mm while weighing in at 170 grams. As for internals, TENAA didn’t disappoint as the A2018 has an unnamed quad-core processor clocked at 2.15GHz along with 4GB of RAM. What is disappointing is that this device passed through certifications with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow on board, which is just unacceptable with Android O coming around the corner.

It wouldn’t be all that surprising to see ZTE keep a similar design to the Axon 7 with the Axon 8, but this is more than likely just a slightly different device than the Axon 7s. This means we’ll keep waiting to see how ZTE plans to follow up the Axon 7 and Axon 7s for 2017.
