The last time we saw Google launch an Android tablet was back in 2015 with the Pixel C. It was later succeeded by the Pixel Slate which ran on Chrome OS instead of Android. We’re sure that many are wondering if Google’s plans for Android tablets have come to an end, but the good news is that that might not be the case.
According to reports from both 9to5Google and The Verge, it appears that Google has confirmed that they have new tablet hardware in the works. 9to5Google reports a particular session at the Cloud Next 2019 event where the Pixelbook Group Lead Product Manager Steve Jacobs dropped some major hints that new hardware is definitely in the works.
Jacobs was speaking about creating devices for employees that are constantly on the go and was quoted as saying:
“The tools they have aren’t really conducive to the lifestyle and work style that makes them maximally productive and excited about going to work every day. And we think there’s some unique things we can do differently than the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate that are going to really help give them what they’re looking for when they’re working in this new modern cloud-first era.”
Google later confirmed to The Verge that its hardware division has new laptops and tablets in development, but stopped short of actually saying what they were or when they might be launched. So far reviews on the Pixel Slate seem to be less than stellar, with many feeling like Google might have missed the mark, but who knows, maybe they might have something new and surprising to announce later this year.
