Earlier this month, Oppo shared a teaser video in which they showed off a smartphone that did not seem to come with a notch or a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera. This device also did not adopt the slideout/popup camera mechanism either. Instead, the company seems to have gone with an under-display front-facing camera that can shoot through the display itself.
For those who are wondering when this marvel of a phone will be made a reality, you’ll be pleased to learn that we should have more details soon. Oppo has recently sent out invites to an event that they will be hosting on the 26th of June at the MWC Shanghai Expo. It is unclear if this announcement might simply be about the tech itself, or if Oppo will actually be launching a smartphone that features the tech.
This is because earlier this month when the company first teased the feature, its VP Brian Shen did caution that the tech isn’t quite where they would like it yet, and that its quality still can’t fully match regular cameras and that there would be some loss in quality. Either that was an old video or Oppo has made massive improvements since then, but we should find out soon enough.

Oppo is not alone in trying to create smartphones with an under-display camera. Shortly after Oppo’s teaser video, Xiaomi also shared a similar video of their own. Samsung had also been previously reported to be working on a similar solution, but for now, it seems that Oppo could be beating both companies to the market.
