2019 was supposed to be the year of the foldable smartphone, but we’re halfway into the year and we have yet to see anything. Huawei’s foldable Mate X has been delayed, and last we heard, the Samsung Galaxy Fold had also been delayed with no new launch date in sight.
While the Huawei Mate X is currently pegged for a launch in September, it seems that Samsung could be getting ahead of the competition because according to Samsung Display Vice President Kim Seong-cheol, he has revealed that the company is now ready to launch the Galaxy Fold, or rather to relaunch it.
During a speech made at The Korean Information Display Society in Seoul, Kim was quoted as saying that the issues with the display have since been ironed out and that the handset is now ready to hit the market. Kim stopped short of actually offering up any kind of release date, but his statement does bode well for those who have been looking forward to the handset.
For those who are unfamiliar with the issues surrounding the phone, basically, reviewers who received early review units discovered what they thought was a screen protector on the front of the phone. Some tried to peel it off, only to discover it was adhered rather strong to the actual display, which caused some units to get damaged.
It was also discovered that the gap between the hinge was too big in which it allowed some debris to get in, causing issues when the phone is folded. Samsung later recalled the review units and announced that they would be going back to the drawing board to try and fix these flaws, ultimately causing a delay. So far both Best Buy and AT&T have cancelled all Galaxy Fold pre-orders until a new release date has been set, which based on Kim’s statement, should be soon.
