Oppo unveils the world’s first smartphone with a camera under its display

0

Last week, Oppo teased that they would be officially unveiling their answer to the notch at the MWC Shanghai Expo. For those who have been eagerly anticipating the tech, you’ll be pleased to learn that the company has since taken the wraps off it which the company has dubbed as the “Under-screen Camera” (USC).

We should point out that the announcement is for the tech itself, and not about a smartphone launch, so what you see now isn’t a phone the company plans to launch just yet. The good news is that Oppo did state that they have plans to eventually launch a phone with the USC tech in the near future, so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for it.

According to Oppo, how they achieved this was by using a display that features a custom transparent material that works with a redesigned pixel structure. This is said to allow light to get into the camera, which is also said to sport a larger sensor and a wider aperture to let more light in.

The company also acknowledges the fact that having a display over the camera can degrade the quality of the photos, but they stated that they have created algorithms to offset it, claiming that it will be “on par with mainstream devices”, although we’ll have to wait and see the samples for ourselves to be sure of that.

It is an interesting piece of tech and we reckon that it will most likely be the future of smartphones. Oppo is not alone in developing this tech as both Xiaomi and Samsung are working on it too, but for now, Oppo seems to have beaten everyone to the punch.
