Sprint is making waves today, announcing that it will be the first US service provider to offer a 5G-enabled OnePlus smartphone to its customers. The exact details of the phone will be chared soon, but the device is lost likely the same OnePlus 7 Pro 5G variant that the company released in Europe recently. The only real difference between the standard OnePlus 7 Pro and the 5G variant in the 5G logo on the outside. That being said the internals of the phone look dramatically different since OnePlus has to arrange the components differently to fit in the 5G antennas.
Currently, Sprint’s 5G network is only available in certain areas of Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Kansas City with additional markets like Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix and Washington, D.C. expected to come online in the coming weeks.
“We value OnePlus’ reputation for balancing high-end quality at a great value,” said Dow Draper, Sprint chief commercial officer. “This new smartphone gives Sprint customers another exciting option for accessing their True Mobile 5G experience.”
Since Sprint and OnePlus aren’t yet revealing any details about the phone itself, there is a slight chance that the device I question may be the upcoming OnePlus 7T Pro which is expected to feature a slight spec bump, using the new Snapdragon 855+ chipset. The only issue is that OnePlus isn’t expected to launch that phone for a few more months.
Either way, we’re excited to see another US service provider give OnePlus a chance, exposing its customers to a great brand that doesn’t charge an arm and a leg for a flagship smartphone. And since the Sprint/T-Mobile merger was recently approved, there’s a good chance that T-Mobile may offer the 5G OnePlus device to its customers as well.
