Everything we know about the Huawei Mate 30 Pro

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro launches tomorrow, and unlike the Pixel 4, we haven’t seen endless leak after leak telling us about every detail of the device. However, we do know a lot of what to expect from the launch event.

The device is a replacement for last year’s Mate 20 Pro, which was great as a whole, but really impressed with its camera prowess. It featured a triple camera setup, something Apple is just now catching up with, with a standard lens, a 3x telephoto, and a wide angle. All this has the Leica branding on it with their tuning under the hood.

The Mate 30 Pro takes that to the next level with a quad camera setup. While we don’t know exactly what will be in this setup, it’s safe to assume it’ll be the same three camera setup as current phones with the addition of something like a ToF lens.

We also expect to see a large 6.7-inch display with extreme curves and a 90Hz refresh rate. Refresh rate is all the rage, and it really makes a big difference in usability. The curve is also interesting, as it doesn’t just go to the edges, but it rolls all the way over to the sides. Some call this a waterfall display, and there’s mixed opinions about it. It can sometimes get in the way of usability, but it sure does look great.

Inside will be Huawei’s latest chip, the Kirin 990, and it should be great. The Kirin line of chips has been solid for the last few years and offers great performance. And thankfully, this one will support 4K60 video shooting, unlike last year’s model.

The biggest issue is the availability of Google Play Services. More specifically, the device may not come with them at all. This is due to the issues the company has with the US and its status on the government’s blacklist. Huawei currently can not use Google’s services like the Play Store, and this puts the future of all upcoming devices at risk. For the Western world,. Play Services are an integral part of any Android smartphone. Without it, can a device, even one as good as the Mate 30 Pro, even survive? It’s hard to say, but we’re hoping for the best.

One sure thing is that the device won’t be launching in North America. If reports are true, even Europe may not get the phone at all. This is likely linked to Google Play Services. So for a while, this might be a China-only device.

This is sad of course, as competition is always a good thing. And the device is looking damn good in leaks, which makes us want it even more.

Alongside the smartphone, we’ll see a few more Huawei products debuted at the launch event. We should see a new Huawei Watch GT 2 with a bigger battery and different display sizes. a new Band 4 Pro for fitness, a Huawei TV with 4K resolution and the new HarmonyOS, and a MediaPad M6 tablet with no Play Store access.

For the full details, we’ll have to wait and see at tomorrow’s event. Stay tuned for more!
