One of the challenges of creating a flexible display that can withstand being folded is how many times can it fold before it becomes permanently damaged? According to Samsung, the Galaxy Fold is said to last about 200,000 folds. We imagine that this number could have been inflated slightly to make the phone look better, but exactly by how much did they inflate those numbers?
As it turns out, it was a lot.
This is according to a report from CNET who wanted to take the Galaxy Fold for a spin and put it through its paces to find out if the 200,000 claim was accurate. Based on their tests, it turns out that the Galaxy Fold managed about 120,000 folds before the hinge was damaged. According to CNET, the goal was to mimic the number of times a person would open and close the phone over the course of 5 years, but at 120,000 folds, it clearly fell short of that.
We should point out that this is only one test and that it might not necessarily be accurate. It is possible that the non-stop folding and unfolding could have caused the phone’s hinge to deteriorate faster than normal, plus using a machine could have added more force than a person’s hands.
Basically, there are too many factors involved to really know if the phone will last 200,000 folds, but regardless, it’s something to consider before you drop $2,000 on the handset. In the meantime, you can check out the entire process in the video above if you want to see how CNET tested it.
