A couple of months ago, Huawei announced their new operating system in the form of Harmony OS. This operating system was created partially in response to the possibility that one day, Huawei would no longer be able to use Android, but at the same time, it could also be used to power all manner of smart devices.
As it stands, the US ban on Huawei is still very much in effect, and as such, phones like the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro do not come with Google Play Services installed, which some feel does cripple the phone somewhat. But does that mean that Huawei could be planning on putting Harmony OS into play soon?
Apparently not.
According to Huawei’s President of Global Media and Communications, Joy Tan, she told MyDrivers that it will probably be years before Harmony OS would be a viable alternative to Android. Tan also suggested that at the moment, there are simply too many Android users who might not necessarily be willing to make the move to a different platform.
Instead, for the intermediate, Huawei plans on creating their own apps and services that could possibly compete with Google Play Services, so while Android will still be the main OS, hopefully Huawei’s own apps and services can fill the gap Google left behind.
