When it comes to set-top boxes, there are many to choose from, with Apple TV being a particularly popular choice, but NVIDIA’s Shield TV has been hands down the best Android TV streaming box for years now. It had been a while since the company last updated hardware, although they have been remarkably consistent with software updates, but today they took the wraps off two new SHIELD TVs.
Starting with the Shield TV, this is the base model with a dramatic physical redesign from the original model. The subtle, all black tubular design is clearly meant to disappear in your entertainment center. It features the NVIDIA Tegra X1+ chipset, 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It also gets a discount from the original at just $149.
Next is the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro, which follows in the console-like appearance of its predecessors. It also features the NVIDIA’s Tegra X1+ chipset, but the Pro model will offer up slightly more RAM at 3GB and more internal storage at 16GB. At $199, this is coming in at the same price as its predecessors.
The Shield was already one of the most powerful streaming media boxes out there and the chipset bump should deliver 25% more power in these new models. They also both support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision and an AI-upscaler to convert your 1080p into 4K.
Both devices naturally support the GeForce NOW cloud gaming service which delivers console gaming to your streaming box, the list of supported titles there is quite impressive now. The Shield TV can also function as a part of your smarthome with support for Google Assistant and Amazon Echo, along with support for Routines through Google Assistant.
The Shield TV remote gets an impressive upgrade as well with IR blasters to control your TV, bluetooth, a remote locator function, a customizable button, voice control, and motion-activated backlit buttons.
