The upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro has been in the news quite a bit lately, but today’s leak finally gives us visual evidence that the phone’s most anticipated feature.
A leaked image from True-Tech.net claims to show off a OnePlus 8 Pro, highlighting the phone’s 120Hz display and its hole-punch cutout for its front-facing camera. We’ve known for a while that the OnePlus 8 Pro would bump the display’s refresh rate up from the 90Hz rate OnePlus introduced to its devices with last year’s OnePlus 7 Pro.
While there is a noticeable difference between 60Hz and 90Hz, it’s still unclear if there is a real benefit in bumping the refresh rate even further. OnePlus has always pushed the boundaries on a few fronts in an effort to differentiate itself from the competition, but those bets haven’t always paid off.
A 120Hz display would result in extremely smooth scrolling in Chrome, Twitter, Instagram, and other apps, but the number of Android games that support 120Hz refresh rates is still limited. Back in November, the number of titles that supported the feature passed the 100 mark. With Samsung and OnePlus expected to deliver 120Hz displays on their 2020 flagship models, developers are likely already hard at work to make sure their games are supported as well.
On the hole-punch front, we were honestly hoping that the rumor wouldn’t come to fruition. The pop-up camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro was pretty spectacular, giving the phone a distinctive look. We don’t have anything against the hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera, but it’s certainly not as appealing as having an edge-to-edge display.
OnePlus still have quite a few months before the launch of the OnePlus 8 Pro and its other OnePlus 8 devices. The pre-production unit shown in this photo may turn out to be dramatically different than the final model. Based on what we’ve seen so far, are you happy with the direction OnePlus is taking with the 8 Pro?
