Google has officially release the Android 11 update, giving its Pixel smartphone owners the privileged of being the first to update their devices to the latest and greatest version of Android.
The update is rolling out now to nearly all of Google’s Pixel smartphones. The only device in Google’s lineup that being left out is the original Pixel which launched in October of 2016.
With the launch of Android 11, Google’s main focus is to improve the usability of Android-powered smartphones with small tweaks throughout the UI, make it easier to communicate by grouping notifications from messaging apps within the notification shade, adding a system-wide messaging bubble system that apps can take advantage of and giving you quick access to your smart home controls directly from the phone’s power menu.
On top of that, Android 11 delivers new privacy and security mechanisms that will ensure that apps you have installed on your smartphone or tablet don’t have unlimited access to the hardware. Google is even including a new permissions protocol that will allow you to grant apps access to your camera, microphone, or location data a single time, requiring the app to request those permissions again the next time the app is opened.
While Android 11 is making its debut on Google’s Pixel devices, it will also be making its way to other smartphones as well. OnePlus is typically one of the first third-party manufacturers to roll out Android updates to its devices, but Oppo, Xiaomi and a few other OEMs have already kicked off their own Android 11 beta program for a select number of devices within their lineups. There’s no telling how long you’ll have to wait to get the Android 11 update on your specific smartphone, but expect to see announcements from all major device manufacturers within the next day or two.
