LG has never been viewed as a brand that delivers must-have technology, but the company is looking to change that with the introduction of the LG Wing – a smartphone with a swivel display.
To put things simply, the LG Wing is a dual-screen smartphone with a main panel that swivels 90-degrees to reveal a companion display that can be used to show tow different apps at once or enhance a single app by showing companion details that may not fit on the main screen.
But for how unique the phone’s design is, the components being used are pretty standard. Powering the phone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of built-in storage, microSD card support. The main display features an extremely-thin 6.8-inch P-OLED panel with a resolution of 2460x 1080 while the second 3.9-inch display is nearly square with a resolution of 1,240 x 1,080.
To make sure the main display stretches edge-to-edge, LG has equipped the LG Wing with a pop-up 32MP selfie camera. On the back,the phone sports a 64MP main camera and two ultrawide cameras (one of which can only be used in swivel mode since it’s main purpose is a new gimbal-motion camera feature which takes advantage of the phone’s 6 motion sensors and advanced stabilization software.
The gimbal mode turns the phone’s second display into a control panel with pan and tilt controls, something we’ve never seen before on a smartphone.
As for the phone’s unique swivel mechanism, LG’s engineers built-in dual springs, dual locks and a hydrollic damper to absorb shock when the screen is swiveled. The LG Wing has been rate for 200,000 swivels which would allow the phone to swivel without issues for at least half a decade.
Naturally, this unique design does come with a few compromises. The first is the weight, coming in at 260 grams, making it one of the heaviest devices on the market, weighing 52 grams more than the massive Galaxy Note 20 Ultra from Samsung. Like the current selection of foldable smartphones, the LG Wing doesn’t come with an official IP rating for dust and water resistance. LG has given the phone a water-resistant coating that should keep it’s internal components save if you get caught in the rain, but be sure to keep the device sealed up in a plastic bag if you’re headed to the beach.
That being said, the phone has passed the Mil-STD-810G compliance test, so it should be just as capable to stand up to the regular abuse most users put their smartphone through on a daily basis.
Since the phone uses the SD765G, it comes with 5G network support. The phone will be making its way to Verizon first, but AT&T and T-Mobile plan to sell the phone as well later this year. We’re still waiting for the phone’s price and launch date to be confirmed, but we’ve heard that the LG Wing will likely carry a sticker price of around $1,000.
