Right now, Apple is embroiled in a legal battle against Epic. There has also been a coalition formed that wants to force Apple to make its App Store more “fair” for developers. For the most part, Google seems to have somehow been left out of the drama, and it seems that the company is not taking any chances.
Google has announced that next year with the release of Android 12, one of the changes that they will be making is the ease in which users can find and download apps from third-party app stores. There are plenty of third-party app stores apart from Google Play, but sometimes downloading apps from those stores might not always be so easy and obvious for some users. According to Google:
“Some developers have given us feedback on how we can make the user experience for installing another app store on their device even better. In response to that feedback, we will be making changes in Android 12 (next year’s Android release) to make it even easier for people to use other app stores on their devices while being careful not to compromise the safety measures Android has in place.”
We’re not sure how the company will go about doing that, but Google states that they will be sharing more details about that in the future. Google is also stressing on how important giving users a choice is, which is why they are doing this. We imagine that for the most part, most Android users can probably find what they need from Google Play, but we suppose giving users more options is not necessarily a bad thing.
