Google Messages will soon help you get rid of those spammy OTPs

To help avoid account hijacking, many companies will use two-factor authentication which is sometimes sent through text messages in the form of a OTP (one time password). This is a one-time code that you use when you’re logging into an online service or to authorize a bank transaction.

The problem is that over time, these OTP messages can pile up and create a ton of unnecessary messages in your inbox. If you hate seeing that clutter, the folks at XDA Developers have spotted a potential new feature in an upcoming update to Google Messages that will deal with that.

According to what they’ve found in the APK teardown, it seems that a future feature of Google Messages will give users the option of automatically deleting these OTPs after 24 hours. Given that these OTP messages are essentially rendered useless once you’ve entered the code, there’s really no need to keep them around, but deleting them manually can be tiresome so having an auto-delete feature is a pretty nice touch.

That being said, there’s no guarantee that this feature will make it into the next update, but the fact that strings were spotted that indicated that feature does exist, it should come sooner rather than later, so keep an eye out for it if this is something that you think will be useful.
