Qualcomm is probably best known in the mobile world for creating and manufacturing chipsets that can be found in nearly every smartphone. But that could change in the future because according to a report from DigiTimes (paywall), it would seem that Qualcomm is apparently interested in creating their own branded smartphone and will be turning to ASUS for help.
The company has scheduled an event in December where it is likely that they will be announcing their new Snapdragon 875 chipsets that will find its way into 2021’s flagship phones, but now it seems that the event could also see Qualcomm unveil their own branded gaming smartphone that they will be collaborating on with ASUS.
It is unclear what role ASUS will be playing in this partnership, but given that the company has created several gaming smartphones to date, perhaps Qualcomm wants to rely on their expertise and experience. It will be interesting to see Qualcomm expand their product offerings, although we have to wonder if it might be a bit late. After all, there are so many competitors in the market today and Qualcomm doesn’t exactly have a reputation for making smartphones, so it could end up being quite a hard sell.
That being said, this doesn’t come as a surprise either. With NVIDIA acquiring ARM and potentially getting back in the mobile chipset game, it would make sense for Qualcomm to start diversifying.
