Samsung is said to be working on a new Exynos chipset called the Exynos 2100 that will most likely find its way to the Samsung Galaxy S21 series in 2021, but it seems that the company has also started work on at least two other high-end chipsets, one of which is said to be packing an AMD GPU that could arrive in 2023.
This is according to a tweet by Ice Universe who notes that there are two models in the works that are codenamed Exynos 9855 and 9925, with the latter possibly being the one with the AMD GPU. Samsung and AMD had previously announced a partnership in 2019 where both companies revealed that they would be working together to bring AMD’s GPU technology to mobile devices.
As we all know
Exynos9830=Exynos990, Exynos9840=Exynos2100,
Now, Samsung is developing Exynos9855 and Exynos9925, the latter may be a processor with AMD GPU pic.twitter.com/LixFZNBNXD— Ice universe (@UniverseIce) October 15, 2020
At the moment, for the most part the GPUs used in the majority of mobile chipsets are of the Mali variant developed by ARM. What’s interesting about this partnership with AMD is that it brings AMD and NVIDIA’s rivalry to the mobile scene. AMD and NVIDIA have been duking it out as far as computer GPUs are concerned, and with NVIDIA now owning ARM, and thus the Mali GPUs, it seems that rivalry will expand to the mobile space.
We’re not sure what we can expect in terms of features or performance as a result of this partnership, but with an estimated completion in 2023, it looks like we’ll be waiting a while before we see anything concrete.
