TCL is making a name for itself in 2020 as a brand focused on delivering great value to consumers. The company’s newest device in its 10-series lineup continues that trend by giving us a 5G ultra-wideband device using a Snapdragon 765G chipset with mmWave support on Verizon for just $400, undercutting the competition by a huge margin.
Keep in mind that the Pixel 4a 5G, which costs $500, had an extra $100 tacked onto its sticker price when Verizon announced its variant of the phone with ultra-wideband support.
While we’ve seen a few budget-friendly devices like the OnePlus Nord, the new TCL 10 5G UW (yeah, we’re not really big fans of the name either) undercuts the competition on price, without too many compromises. The only real advantage that the Nord has over the TCL 10 5G is the higher refresh rate of its display and its faster-charging speeds.
Along with the Snapdragon 765G chipset from Qualcomm, the TCL 10 5G UW features 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a microSD card slot, 6.5-inch FHD+ display with HDR10 support, a 4500 mAh battery, a triple camera system on the back with a 48MP main sensor, 8MP ultrawide and 5MP macro camera and an 8MP selfie camera.
Like the OnePlus Nord, the TCL 10 5G features a glass back panel and a plastic frame to help keep the cost of build materials down.
After using the phone for a full day, I have to say that I’m fairly impressed with the performance and build quality of the device. TCL still has some work to do on the UI front and it would have been nice to see Android 11 pre-installed on the phone, but we expect it’ll be updated within a few months.
What makes the TCL 10 5G UW that much more compelling is that OnePlus isn’t bringing the original Nord to the US market. You can pay a little more to have it imported, but that defeats the whole point of a budget-friendly smartphone. If you’ve been waiting for a great device running the new Snapdragon 765G, the TCL 10 5G UW is an amazing budget-friendly option.
