AT&T trounces the competition in 5G speedtests

When it comes to mobile connectivity, not all networks are equal. You could be connected to a 5G network from one carrier, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the speed you’re getting is equal (or better) to that of another carrier. This is why apart from things like costs, plans, and coverage, speed should also be taken into consideration when choosing a carrier.

If you’re in the market for the fastest 5G network in the country, then you might not have to look further than AT&T. This is according to Ookla’s Speedtest in which they found that AT&T has the fastest 5G network in the country for Q4 2020. The carrier managed to nab an overall score of 50.27, with T-Mobile coming in close at 47.16. Meanwhile, Sprint (which is now part of T-Mobile) managed 41.43, while Verizon finished in fourth with 40.49.

According to AT&T’s EVP-Technology Operations, Chris Sambar:

“We continue to lead the competition and deliver the speeds our customers need thanks to the dedicated, hard work by our teams. I am determined we have the best and most innovative engineers in the business.”

The carrier also boasts that they have achieved a new milestone of being the Overall Fastest Wireless Speeds in the US for two years in a row, while also being the Fastest Wireless Network for iPhone since 2019.

That being said, 5G is still very much in the process of being rolled out. This means that coverage isn’t as wide or as ubiquitous compared to 4G LTE. We imagine that over time, carriers should improve their networks and connectivity, so these scores could change in the future. But for now, if you’re looking for pure speed and live in an area that is covered by AT&T’s 5G network, then they could be worth signing up with.
