Google taps Samsung to make a foldable display for a future Pixel

2020 was definitely not the kindest of years for Google’s release schedule, along with everyone else’s for that matter. It’s already been rumored that the Pixel 4a was originally intended to launch at Google I/O, but after the event was canceled, that threw a wrench in Google’s plans. Then there was a rumored debacle as to whether the Pixel 4a 5G was really the Pixel 5 XL or something else entirely.

Nevertheless, Google still managed to launch three new devices last year, and 2021 could be rather interesting if a new report is to be believed. Rumors have already been swirling that Google is working on a foldable device of its own, and a report from TheElec claims that Google is working with Samsung on a new foldable display.

The rumored size comes in around 7.6-inches, which is the same display size as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 that also launched last year. Unfortunately, there’s really not much else to go off of, other than previous rumors that Google was already working on development for a foldable device.

Seeing a folding smartphone, tablet, or phablet from Google would be quite a surprise. Especially considering the more laid-back and conservative approach we saw from last year’s releases. But with foldable devices getting into the hands of more users with the Z Fold 2 and Z Flip 5G, along with the increased focus on providing stability for folding devices in Android 12, it wouldn’t be outside of the realm of possibility to see a folding Pixel.

But then again, these are just rumors, and it wouldn’t be the first time that we’ve seen Google working on something, only for it to be thrown aside.
