If you thought that companies like Facebook, Instagram, and Google are the only ones collecting data on you, think again. In fact, it seems that your own carrier is collecting data on you and could be selling that data to advertising.
This is according to a report from The Wall Street Journal who discovered a privacy policy update from T-Mobile. According to this privacy policy update, the carrier will soon be automatically enrolling their customers in an ad targeting program. This means that your online and device usage will be sold to advertisers so that they know how to better cater ads towards things you are interested in.
T-Mobile has not denied these changes and in fact, according to a spokesperson, they claim that customers actually “prefer” to see more relevant ads, which is why they’ll be defaulting users to this program. The good news is that this isn’t mandatory. T-Mobile customers who aren’t keen on having their data sold or see personalized ads will be able to opt out of it.
The downside is that for the most part, most people wouldn’t know that they have this option to begin with, so we’re not sure how many will actually end up opting out.
