It was only a matter of time, but now we know when Google’s yearly developer conference will kick-off. The company started off the fun earlier today by releasing a cryptic puzzle, that was quickly solved by the folks over at 9to5Google. When solved, the puzzle revealed the dates for Google I/O 2021, which will kick off on May 18th and end on May 20th.

Last year, Google completely canceled its developer conference, due to concerns and constraints surrounding the pandemic. With the cancellation, it seems that this threw a wrench into Google’s plans to launch the Pixel 4a, ending up in a jumbled schedule of device launches later in the year, culminating with the Pixel 5 after the release of Android 11.
This year, the event is completely free and virtual, meaning that everyone and anyone can fire up their browser to follow the different keynotes and “Technical Sessions”. Despite being 100% virtual, Google will continue to provide Workshops that are led by instructors, but you will need to register for those if you want to participate.
Additionally, there will be virtual meetups, along with AMAs and more throughout the duration of I/O 2021. Google plans on releasing the full schedule for events and meetings later this month.
As for what we’re expecting, it’s entirely possible that Google could show off some new hardware. The most likely candidates are the Pixel 5a and the recently (and accidentally) confirmed Pixel Buds A. But developers will have plenty to dive through, as we could see unannounced features that will arrive on future versions on Android, including Android 12, along with other APIs and features for Google’s myriad of products.
