Google Phone app finally gets Caller ID feature

When someone calls, you have to look at your phone to see who’s calling. This is fine and we probably do that anyway, but what if your phone is in another room and you don’t want to rush over to get it only to find out it’s a telemarketer? That’s where Caller ID would have come in handy.

The good news is that it looks like Google has finally added basic Caller ID to the Google Phone app. The feature was initially discovered back in September 2020 by the folks at XDA Developers, but it was discovered in an APK teardown meaning that Google had not implemented it yet.

Now it seems that the feature is being pushed out to Android users who use the Google Phone app. What this new feature does is that whenever you get a phone call, it will announce the name and number of the person calling you, so if it’s from an unknown number, you won’t have to bother to get your phone and you get to decide which calls to take.

Of course, having a smartwatch does solve that problem rather easily, but if you don’t have a smartwatch, then we guess this is a useful update to have.
