Last year, it was revealed that Huawei quietly sold off their Honor sub-brand. This was said to be due to the US government’s restrictions on Huawei, which would have applied to its subsidiaries as well, so by offloading Honor, the brand could in theory preload their phones with Google’s services.
It turns out that this was a gamble that has paid off for Honor. This is because according to a report from Android Authority, it seems that Honor has confirmed that its smartphones will indeed come with Google’s services preloaded on it. This was confirmed through the company’s German Twitter account in response to a question, but it has since been deleted.
This means that since the US government’s blacklisting of Huawei in 2019, this would be the first Honor smartphone for a very long time to get Google’s mobile services back onto its platform. Of course, this ultimately ends up benefitting Honor and its new owners more than it does Huawei, but it was for the greater good.
In the meantime, Huawei is trying to find new footing by launching devices with its own HarmonyOS platform. It remains to be seen if HarmonyOS will pose as a serious threat or competitor to Android, so we’ll have to wait and see.
