When it comes to GPUs on mobile devices, companies like AMD and NVIDIA don’t really have much of a presence, if at all. That is expected to change later this year because during Computex 2021, AMD’s CEO Dr. Lisa Su confirmed that the company’s RDNA2 GPU will be making its way into Samsung’s Exynos chipset.
We know that AMD and Samsung have entered into a partnership but we weren’t 100% sure when this team up would bear fruit, but it looks like now we know. There is no mention of which Exynos chipset will be benefiting from this new GPU, but it will most likely be in a flagship chipset, maybe the ones that will power Samsung’s upcoming foldables.
“AMD has partnered with industry leader Samsung for several years to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market, and we are happy to announce that we will bring custom graphics IP (Intellectual Property) to Samsung’s next flagship mobile SoC (System on Chip) with ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities.”
It was initially thought that we might have to wait until 2023 before we saw a Samsung chipset with AMD’s graphics, but that future has arrived much sooner than we thought. It seems like a good time for Samsung to step things up as well, especially with Apple’s M-series chipsets.
