Every race is huge, but there are few races as big as the F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Every season, there’s a race in every country, but the race at Silverstone is particularly important this year for a few reasons. We’ll get into those reasons momentarily, but let’s just say you definitely won’t want to miss out on this one.
What is the F1 British Grand Prix?
The F1 British Grand Prix is taking place tomorrow (July 18) at 10 a.m. ET / 7 a.m. PT / 3 p.m. BST. This is the 10th race of the season, out of a total of 23 races, but is the only one to be held at Silverstone.
Part of the reason why this race is different is due to the fact that the qualifying rules have been drastically changed. Instead of registering the fastest lap, the qualifying order will be determined via a 100km race. This equates to about 17 laps on Silverstone, with the top three scoring championship points, along with determining the order.
This is the home race for defending champion Lewis Hamilton with Mercedes. Hamilton has won this race two straight seasons, and six times out of the last seven. Hamilton’s dominant reign in F1 may be coming to a close, as Max Verstappen and the Red Bull Racing team currently hold the lead in the Driver Standings by 32 points. But a return to form from Lewis Hamilton could turn the tide for the Mercedes team over the course of the rest of the season.
Current Standings
- Max Verstappen – Red Bull Racing Honda
- Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes
- Sergio Perez – Red Bull Racing Honda
- Lando Norris – Mclaren Mercedes
- Valtteri Bottas – Mercedes
- Charles Leclerc – Ferrari
- Carlos Sainz – Ferrari
- Daniel Riccardo – Mclaren Mercedes
- Pierre Gasly – Alphatauri Honda
- Sebastian Vettel – Aston Martin Mercedes
