When it comes to Android updates, we expect that most manufacturers would give at least two major updates and 2-3 years worth of security updates, but Sony isn’t going down that route. According to a report from DroidApp.nl, Sony might only give its brand new Xperia 1 III flagship smartphone one single major update.
So what does this mean? Given that Android 12 hasn’t been released yet, we can only imagine that if this report is true, the Xperia 1 III will be updated to Android 12 later this year and Sony will be calling it quits on updates. They will, of course, be giving users security updates, but even then it is said to be two years worth.
It is unclear why Sony is only bothering with one major Android update. The phone is most definitely of flagship quality but Sony isn’t treating it as such. For a phone priced over $1,200, it sure seems like Sony will be stiffing a lot of customers. The company hasn’t officially commented on their update schedule yet so there is a chance the report could be wrong, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
Sony isn’t alone in cutting short Android updates though. OnePlus ticked off a lot of fans and customers with its Nord phones when they announced that some of the phones in the lineup would also only receive a single major update.
