Late last year, ZTE released the world’s first smartphone featuring an under-display selfie camera with the ZTE Axon 20 5G. Unfortunately, things didn’t exactly work out the way that ZTE had hoped, with many reviewers panning the phone because of its subpar selfie camera experience. But hey, if you don’t keep trying, what’s the point?
Today, the ZTE Axon 30 has been announced, introducing the company’s second attempt at an under-display selfie camera. The phone has been teased and rumored for the past few months, but now the wait is officially over. With the Axon 30, we’re getting a 6.92-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 360Hz touch-sampling rate, to go along with a 20.5:9 aspect ratio.
Powering the Axon 30 is the Snapdragon 870G, and ZTE is introducing its new “memory fusion technology” that helps add some additional memory through a process similar to RAM swapping. Before getting into the selfie camera, the Axon 30 sports a quad-camera array on the back of the phone. This includes a 64MP primary lens, an ultrawide camera with a 120-degree field of view, a macro lens, and a depth sensor.
ZTE is packing a variety of different filters and camera shooting modes to give you exactly what you want, no matter the situation. The Axon 30 even supports “multi-camera simultaneous shooting”, which is one of the little features that can really turn some heads.
Now for this selfie camera. The area around the display offers a high-pixel density of 400 PPI, aiming to provide better display performance, without making too much of a sacrifice in terms of image quality. ZTE is making use of a new “independent display chip”, in an effort to synchronize the display with the area around the camera.
With the Axon 30, the company claims to be using “7 layers of highly transparent materials and 3 special processing technologies”. The goal of this combination is to make the camera area more “light-transmissive.” Finally, ZTE states it’s using a light-sensitive 2.24um-equivalent camera to ensure that the selfie camera has as much as light as it needs.
As for battery life, the Axon 30 features a 4,200mAh cell, along with 55W fast charging speeds. There’s even a “triple ice cooling system” to ensure that your new phone doesn’t overheat while maintaining its top-notch performance.
Pricing and global availability for the Axon 30 have not yet been announced. We’ll be sure to provide those details once they are made available.
