During an interview, follow the launch of the Honor Maric 3 series, CEO George Zhao was asked if Honor had any plans to launch a foldable or rollable smartphone. While companies usually deflect questions like these until a product is officially unveiled, George Zhao revealed that an Honor Foldable smartphone is in the company’s future. The CEO said that foldable smartphone technology is extremely difficult, but Honor is working on “the best solution.”
The revelation that Honor is working on a foldable-display smartphone comes just 24 hours after Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The market for these devices is still quite small, but Samsung is predicting the foldable smartphone sales will double in 2021 with the launch of its devices and those from its competitors.
Honor’s George Zhao didn’t elaborate on the form factor the company’s foldable smartphone will deliver or when we can expect the device to hit the market. With more and more companies working on foldable display technologies, we should expect products to dramatically improve in quality and durability pretty quickly. The company’s main focus right now is the launch of its Magic 3, Magic 3 Pro and Magic 3 Pro+. These three flagship-tier smartphones will be making their debut in China, but will also be heading to markets across Asia, Europe and South America.
