There’s a lot of focus on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and foldable phones in general right now, and we could be close to the release of another option. Microsoft announced that it will be hosting an event on September 22, and since Windows 11 has already been unveiled and release date confirmed, it has to be about hardware.
In the “announcement” tweet, you can zoom in and see what appears to be a Surface Pro device of some sort. Whether this means we’re in store for a redesigned Surface Pro 8 or a new Surface Pro X will remain to be seen. But many will be watching this event hoping that we’ll be officially introduced to the Microsoft Surface Duo 2.

There’s a lot riding on the Surface Duo 2, as Microsoft is rumored to put flagship specs into its latest device. This includes a triple camera array on the back that won’t provide potato-quality pictures while retaining much of the same design from the original Surface Duo. We’re expecting Microsoft to fix a lot of the things that were missing in the Surface Duo, including 5G connectivity, a flagship chipset, and NFC capabilities for contactless payments.
It will also be interesting to see how Microsoft approaches the Surface Duo 2 from a software perspective. The company has been working with Google to develop apps that are better-tailored for folding phones, but the current Surface Duo is still running Android 10. Of course, we aren’t expecting the Surface Duo 2 to launch with Android 12, however, that would be one way for Microsoft to come out with a bang.
There are more than a few things that we would fix with a potential Surface Duo successor, but we’re also hoping that Microsoft keeps the design as close to the first one as possible. And if you want to mess around with a Duo before the potential of a successor being announced, you can grab one for just $415 for the AT&T locked version, or $599 for the Unlocked version. These prices are a far cry from the $1,400 price tag the Duo commanded at launch.
