The Pixel Fold may not be the only foldable phone coming from Google

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Review 7

For a good chunk of the year, we’ve heard about Google potentially working on a “Pixel Fold“. There have been references to the device and its “Passport” codename in the Android 12 beta codebase. Of course, with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro around the corner, there are some reservations about whether Google will actually release this device before the end of the year.

Evan Blass (@evleaks) added a bit of gas to the fire this morning with the following tweet:

On one hand, it’s great to see that the Pixel Passport will arrive before we move into 2022. However, there are some things to be concerned about if Google has actually been working on the device for two years. As evidenced by the Microsoft Surface Duo, starting development on a device too early could leave it feeling like a waste and out-of-date before it’s even available. We don’t think this is what would happen with the Pixel Passport, but it’s still something to be wary of.

There’s also a chance that the Passport isn’t the only foldable phone that Google is actively working on. This is because the team over at 9to5Google has found references to a new device called “Jumbojack”. The device was referenced in the Android 12.1 code, and is likely to be feature a design similar to that of the Galaxy Z Fold.

It shouldn’t come as too much of a shock considering how close Google and Samsung have been working together as of late. But then that leaves us wondering what the Passport will end up looking like. Are we in store for a Galaxy Fold to Galaxy Z Fold 2 transition from Google? Or is it possible that Google is working on multiple different types of foldable phones.

Our excitement for the Pixel 6 series is already through the roof. But as someone who is a huge fan of the foldable form factor, I would LOVE to see an option released with stock Android.
