One of the problems with smartwatches is that they need to be charged. Sure, some last for a week or two, but ultimately they still need to be charged and having to bring along an extra charger while you’re overseas seems like a hassle, but perhaps Samsung might have the answer for that – solar power.
According to a patent discovered by LetsGoDigital, it seems that Samsung has filed for a patent for a smartwatch that can be charged using solar energy. This comes in the form of a band for the smartwatch with solar panels built into it. This means that in theory, while you’re out and about, you should be able to keep the watch charged up.
Of course there are things like the panel’s efficiency to consider and how fast it can actually charge up the watch, but at least as a concept, it’s pretty cool. While maybe we still need to charge the watch every so often, having solar as a charging option could extend battery life and maybe we could get a month or two before the next recharge.
There’s no telling if Samsung has plans to make this a reality, so don’t get your hopes up just yet, but what say you? Is a solar-charging smartwatch something you’d like to see become a reality one day?
